CLEAR Fife and 2BScientific

CLEAR stands for Community-Led Environmental Action for Regeneration. They work to improve the environment in Buckhaven and Methil to make a positive difference for people, place and the planet.

Their activities have many strands including: planting over 3500 native trees every year, creating community orchards and wildflower meadows, planting 100,000 spring bulbs a year, running a bike and wood workshop, alongside two productive community gardens with their own range of homegrown produce including pressed apple juice, jams and chutneys.

They have a great team of local volunteers who help them with their ambitious programmes of work. They also engage with schools, The Princes Trust, Employability squads and run an Environmental skills course for young people.

They are a hands-on, practical charity providing an opportunity for local people who are often left behind due to mental health issues, learning difficulties or challenges in their lives. They find their volunteers thrive as part of an inclusive team, learning new skills, building confidence, improving mental and physical health and wellbeing and enjoy the meaningful work they do.

Supporting their work gives CLEAR Fife the opportunity to help more local people to continue to make a positive difference in a neglected community. There is opportunity for a wide range of inputs from horticultural materials, timber supplies and bikes.

One of their Community based Environmental projects though includes their Buckhaven Bees!

Within their community gardens – as well as in local CLEAR members gardens – they have 5 bee hives.

They believe bees are an essentially important part of the natural environment which has unfortunately been negatively affected by loss of habitat, pollination opportunities and climate change.

They have looked after their bees and harvested local honey for over 5 years and have a happy bee population. They have some display demonstration cases which they use at open days and children events to introduce local folk to the bees in an up close and safe way.

They do not receive any financial help for their beekeepers and the maintenance required to their hives which they struggle to cover with very limited funding opportunities.

In January 2025, the ESES Communities Team met with personnel from 2BScientific whose head office is based in Oxfordshire.

2BScientific is a leading distributor of innovative life science products, serving customers in the UK, Europe, and worldwide

Their sustainability efforts apply across all facets of their company and they frequently make donations to Bees for Development and the British Beekeepers Association to ensure that both the environment is conserved and maintained for the benefit of both people and bees.

Edinburgh University encouraged 2BScientific to sign up to our portal to enable them to deliver Community Benefits within the ESES City Region Deal.

Hence, following our discussions and subsequent collaboration, 2BScientific provided a donation to CLEAR Fife to support their beekeeping project.

The monies donated has allowed us to keep looking after our bees over the next year, run more display events for people to experience the wonder of bees and promote better engagement and understanding.
