Borders Community Action - Meet the Funders

07 May 2025

On Wednesday, the 30th of April, Julie and Katharine had the pleasure of attending the Borders Community Action - Meet the Funders 2025 Event.

The venue was St Boswells Village Hall, and Café ReCharge provided the catering; both are fantastic examples of social businesses. St Boswells Village Hall is a charity; the fee for hiring the hall is used to maintain the hall as a community facility and to host events for Scottish Borders residents. Café ReCharge CIC is a surplus food café based in Galashields that uses unsold supermarket produce to prepare delicious, fresh meals. Its mission is to tackle food waste and food poverty in its community.

The venue was delightful, and the food was delicious. Organisations like this are a perfect way to invest in communities by making conscious procurement choices.

Julie from the team participated in a panel discussion and explained to delegates how they could engage with the portal. She was joined by the following organisations, who were also there to explain what they can offer:

SSE Renewables: Powering Communities to Net Zero Fund

Foundation Scotland: Helps distribute financial support to charities and community groups across Scotland.

The National Lottery Community Fund: Distributes funds to communities across the UK.

The Robertson Trust: Offer funding to charitable organisations that support people and communities in Scotland who are living with poverty or trauma.

NHS Community Benefit Portal: A free and easy to use online service that connects NHS Scotland suppliers with third sector community organisations within Scotland.

Royal Bank of Scotland – Social & Community Capital: Social & Community Capital is a charity funded by Royal Bank of Scotland to help social enterprises, charities and community businesses.

Social Investment Scotland: A Social Enterprise and Charity offering loan funding and business support.

First Port: A charity and social enterprise that helps budding social entrepreneurs make their ideas happen.

Julie Addington, ESES Community Impact Officer said: "The best part of the day was meeting the lovely, warm Scottish Borders residents and hearing about incredible things they do to support their community. I heard about people organising the rebuilding of bridges, supporting digital exclusion and working to ensure the protection of one of their most valuable resources, the River Tweed."
