Tackling In-Work Poverty through Fair Work
In October, Julie from the ESES Communities team attended the Edinburgh Fair Work Action Group's event, Tackling In-Work Poverty through Fair Work, which brought together employers and partners committed to creating fairer workplaces and reducing poverty across the city.
The event highlighted the growing impact of the Fair Work Movement, with the number of Living Wage employers in Edinburgh having nearly doubled since 2021. However, significant challenges remain, with around 80,000 people in Edinburgh experiencing relative poverty, and 61% of those living in a household where at least one adult is in work.
Attendees explored priorities and actions for the next three years, discussing how organisations can collaborate to promote fair work principles, improve job quality, and tackle in-work poverty. The insights gathered will help shape the Edinburgh Fair Work Action Group's next action plan, due to launch next year.
This work closely aligns with the Community Wealth Building pillar of Fair Work and Just Labour Markets, which seeks to ensure more people can access secure, rewarding employment and benefit from fair pay, good working conditions, and opportunities for progression. By supporting fair work practices, organisations can help build a more inclusive economy and create lasting social and economic benefits for local communities.
At ESES Communities, we recognise that sustainable employment, fair pay, and positive workplace practices are vital to building stronger communities and reducing inequality. We look forward to following the development of the new action plan and exploring opportunities to support this important work.
