Thermo Fisher Scientific Support Community Garden
Jock Tamson’s Gairden is new charity which offers a large outdoor garden space and homes several community gardens located in Duddingston, Edinburgh. The Garden provides a breathtaking and scenic view of Duddingston Loch and the infamous Arthur’s Seat making it an inviting place for all who visit. The name of the organisation derives from the well-known Scottish saying, "We’re a’ Jock Tamson’s bairns" which translates to "We’re all John Thomson’s children" and implies that we are all the same under the skin.
Jock Tamson’s Gairden grow fruit, vegetables and flowers which they sell through various outlets and also donate to charities within Edinburgh and the local areas. The organisation also provides a safe and welcoming space and offers opportunities to everyone but places special emphasis on providing supported volunteering for those who are socially isolated or have experience with mental health problems.

The garden also encourages using the land to grow organic fruit and vegetables to provide a centre of excellence in promoting organic gardening for the folk who live in the parish. The team want to pass on their knowledge of organic gardening, with their skills and produce benefiting the local area.
The organisation registered a request on the ESES Communities portal in December 2024 and requested assistance with printing 5000 copies of their leaflet. The leaflet contains detailed information on the work that they do, their services and how you can get involved!
The leaflet also provides visitors with a detailed map. This resource is intended to assist them in navigating the expansive garden and community garden spaces.

Jock Tamson's Gairden gets more visitors every year, and this number is likely to increase because we were recently featured on Monty Don's British Gardens. We are really grateful to Thermo Fisher Scientific for this kind donation, The leaflets are a great way to let people know about our work and to provide contact details for people who want to get involved with what we do.

Many of our team live in and around Edinburgh, and like a lot of people, we all love a bit of outdoor time and a good space to do some gardening. This project really struck a chord with us, and we felt it represented our personal values. We work in an increasingly global market, but ESES Communities enabled us to provide a really local benefit in a quick and simple way, connecting us with a project that was providing a real community benefit in the local area.
